Mike: So Peter, when I think of learning words, it’s… the total opposite of “pain-free.” |
Peter: Yes, I think most people imagine looking words up in a dictionary one by one… like I used to… or memorizing a list of words… like I used to… or maybe the flashcards - flipping through them one by one. Yeah, Like I used to. Yes, this is probably painful. |
Mike: Yeah! So, when you say “pain-free,” can learning words really be that pain-free? |
Peter: There are a few special ways you can learn words with our system… and make it easier, again not guaranteeing pain-free but easier. And we’ll explain each one. So, the first one on our list is… |
Mike: Number one, learn with our conversational lessons. |
Peter: So, one of the best ways to pick up new words is through conversations because the words are in context… so in our lessons, they have conversations. |
Mike: Ah, because you hear how the words are used… Instead of learning words with no context? |
Peter: Exactly. So listeners, here’s how: in every lesson, you’ll hear a quick conversation, and then you will come across words you don’t know. But don’t worry, because our teachers translate and explain everything. And, when you hear the conversation again at the end of the lesson, you will understand the whole conversation and every single word inside. But the big benefit is… you’re learning words in context of an actual conversation, instead of learning words alone. |
Mike: So, learning through conversations, I like that. Okay, number two: is….Listen to the dialogue track. |
Peter: So this one is similar to the first one. But with the dialogue track… you get JUST the conversation from that lesson. |
Mike: Without translations or explanations, right? |
Peter: You got it. So you can listen to the dialogue without retaking the whole lesson. And the words will stick better if you review that dialogue track often. |
Mike: And the conversation and grammar rules will stick better too. Okay, Number three is: Listen to the review track. |
Peter: The review track is just a quick audio lesson of all the key words in that lesson. |
Mike: So you can press play and listen to all of the words and their definitions. |
Peter: Which, I think, is a pretty pain-free way to review words. |
Mike: Number Four: Play the Vocabulary Slideshow. |
Peter: Now this is a feature on the site. With the Slideshow, you can play the lesson vocabulary… see the words and hear the pronunciation at the same time. |
Mike: So the difference between this and the review track, you get to see the words here as well, right? |
Peter: Exactly. And you can play the Slideshow on repeat for however long you want… until the words are stuck in your head. |
Mike: Okay, Number Five: Take the multiple-choice assessments after the lessons. |
Peter: So, after you complete a lesson, you’ll get an assessment that tests you on the words and grammar that you learned. |
Mike: And testing yourself, or active recall, is a proven way to remember what you learn. |
Peter: Exactly. Testing yourself might sound scary… but it’s a much better way to remember words than, say... something like memorizing a vocabulary list. |
Mike: Number Six is Study with Spaced Repetition FlashCards... |
Peter: And the flashcards are an advanced study tool that our Premium and Premium PLUS members use. You can think of the flashcards as a teacher inside of your computer...who quizzes you and sorts the words out for you by how well you know them. |
Mike: So flashcards quiz you instead of you having to quiz yourself. |
Peter: Correct and it's such a big difference. This I believe takes the pain of trying to learn on your own. So, words that you struggle with, they’ll quiz you on them more and more, and the words that you know…you’ll start to see them less and less, spaced out over time. Hence the word spaced repetition. You’ll see them again in 2 days, 4 days, and later and later, the more you know them. |
Mike: And this is so you don’t forget them, right? |
Peter: Precisely. That’s how spaced repetition learning works. |
Mike: Right, every time you come back to review, your memory gets stronger. |
Peter: And with our flashcards, you don’t have to remember what to review… the flashcards know which words you need and will give you the ones you need. |
Mike: Listeners, by the way, if you’re a member… |
Peter: …then you already have access to these study tools… |
Mike: Try out these tips and see which one you like best. |
Peter: And remember… |
