Cześć! Jestem Joanna. Hi! I’m Joanna.
Welcome to PolishPod101.com’s “Polski w 3 minuty”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Polish.
This time we will learn about two very useful verbs - lubić, which means “to like” and uwielbiać, which means “to love”. I’m sure that when you visit Poland people will keep asking you about food you like eating. Let’s learn how to answer such question.
A question you probably will be asked quite a lot is:
Czy lubisz polskie jedzenie?
“Do you like Polish food?”
[slowly] Czy lubisz polskie jedzenie?
And the answer can be very simple, like “Yes” - Tak or “No” - Nie, but it’s better if you include the name of some dish that you like.
For example:
Lubię bigos.
[slowly] Lubię bigos.
Lubię stand for “I like” and bigos is a name of very traditional Polish dish, which in English can be called a sauerkraut stew.
If you happen to go out for a dinner with your friends they may want to ask you about some specific dish. In this case you will probably hear a question Czy lubisz bigos?
“Do you like bigos?”
[slowly] Czy lubisz bigos?
or simply Lubisz bigos?
Let’s break down this question. Czy lubisz bigos? “Do you like bigos?”
Czy, as you learned in previous lessons, has no meaning and indicates a question. If we want, we can skip it and just use the right intonation: lubisz bigos? Then comes lubisz, which is the 2nd person form of lubić. It stands for the English “you like”. And finally, the name of the food or just something you like, in this case bigos, “sauerkraut stew.”
If you want to say that you like something very much, just add one word - bardzo. Then we will get a sentence like...
Bardzo lubię bigos.
“I like bigos very much”
[slowly] Bardzo lubię bigos.
or
Bardzo lubię polskie jedzenie.
“I like Polish food very much”
[slowly] Bardzo lubię polskie jedzenie.
Finally, if you want to say that you really love something it’s better to use the verb uwielbiać instead of lubić. So how would you say “I love Polish food”? Let’s try together:
Uwielbiam polskie jedzenie.
[slowly] Uwielbiam polskie jedzenie.
or
Uwielbiam czerwone buty.
“I love red shoes.”
[slowly] Uwielbiam czerwone buty.
Now it’s time for Joanna’s Insights.
When you want to express your likes, just use the verb lubić. When you want say that you like something very much, just add bardzo.
If it’s still not enough you can always use uwielbiać, which means “to love”. Feel free to use it about anything and as much as you want. Please note that when you want to say “I love you” to someone, unlike in English, you have to use different word.
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verbs - lubić and uwielbiać - which you use depending on the degree of your love!
In our next Polski w 3 minuty lesson we will learn how to use the next verb!
Be sure to check it out!
Do zobaczenia!
