Hi Henry

Thank you for your message. Actually “proszę” is both “please” and “you are welcome”. The only slight difference between them may be a delicate change of the intonation. Also “proszę” as in the meaning of “you are welcome” most of the time is a response to “dziękuję” (thank you).

Also “proszę” can mean “here you go” if you hand something to somebody. And to make case more interesting “proszę” can also mean “go ahead”, when for example you let your wife pass through the door first. It can also mean a little bit daring comment meaning or “do it” or “go ahead, try it”. But in the last case please be careful ;-) Usually if the intonation is daring and angry  it is better… not to do it.

As mentioned at the beginning you have to try to hear the intonation in which the word is said.

I hope that helps.

Sincerely
Piotr

Hi

Thanks for the above tip. Enjoying learning Polish from your website. One comment - the writing and review questions in this section only feature ‘proszę’ not all the new words in this lesson.

Cheers
Nicky

how do I type polish script for answering the test questions?

Dear Richard,

I come from northern Poland and I’m sorry to say that, but I don’t think we say “proszę” different way, than they do in central or southern Poland. It’s just that some people don’t pronounce words clearly or speak very fast, which results in such small differences like in the case you’ve mentioned.
Some differences in the way we speak or use some words DO exist, but not in this case.

Thank you for writing about that observation. If you want to share about something again, feel free to do so! :)
