POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Brandon: Letโs talk a little bit about Zakopane. Why should the listeners go there, Marzena? |
Marzena: Because itโs a great place, especially if you like the outdoors. Itโs a small town in the heart of the Tatra Mountains, so if youโre keen on hiking, climbing, spelunking, ski jumping, skiing or snowboarding itโs the place for you. |
Brandon: Sounds great! But what if youโre not into sports? |
Marzena: Then itโs still worth it to visit, because there are many walking trails around Zakopane. Itโs also a great chance to try food that is unique to that region and experience the unique culture of the native people. |
Brandon: Sounds like a must-see place in Poland! |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Brandon: Letโs take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. Marzena, whatโs our first word? |
Marzena: stopieล |
Brandon: Which means โdegreeโ, โstepโ, or โrankโ |
Marzena: In the dialogue it meant โdegreeโ, when talking about temperature, so degrees Celsius, which in Polish is "stopnie Celsjusza". |
Brandon: Why didn't they use the word โcelciusโ? |
Marzena: In everyday speech we cut it off, since everyone knows what we mean. |
Brandon: Are are any other meanings? |
Marzena: Yes, thereโs one more and itโs โgradeโ, like in school. For example, "mรณj syn ma bardzo dobre stopnie z biologii". |
Brandon: meaning โMy son has very good grades in biologyโ. Thatโs a pretty big variety of meanings. Okay, whatโs the next word? |
Marzena: sprawdzaฤ |
Brandon: This word also has more than one meaning, but the main one is โto checkโ or โverifyโ. |
Marzena: Letโs go through a few phrases to see how we can use "sprawdzaฤ". First is an example related to this lessonโs dialogue - Sprawdลบ pogodฤ na jutro. |
Brandon: meaning โcheck the weather for tomorrowโ. |
Marzena: next - Sprawdzฤ to na internecie. |
Brandon: meaning โIโll check it on the Internetโ. |
Marzena: and the last one is - Ziemniaki juลผ ugotowane? - zaraz sprawdzฤ - |
Brandon: โAre the potatoes ready yet? - Iโll check in a secondโ. |
Marzena: Also, if we add the word "siฤ" to "sprawdzaฤ", we will get "sprawdzaฤ siฤ" which has slightly different meaning from the verb standing alone. |
Brandon: It means that something has turned out to be as a person thought, or something turned out to be true. To understand that better, can you give us an example please Marzena? |
Marzena: Sure! Moje najgorsze obawy siฤ sprawdziลy - |
Brandon: meaningโMy worst fears came trueโ. Now, thereโs more information about these two words in the lesson notes, so check those out. Now onto the grammar! |
GRAMMAR POINT |
Brandon: In this lesson, youโll learn how to use the Polish future tense. Itโs a big topic, so weโll start off with one kind of sentence that expresses the future. |
Marzena: That sentence makes use of the future form of the verb "byฤ", which is "bฤdzie". |
Brandon: To remind you, that verb means โto beโ |
Marzena: Now letโs go through the conjugation of "bฤdzie". As always, listeners, repeat after me. |
Brandon: After you do so, I will give you the English. Weโll start off with the singular... |
Marzena: bฤdฤ |
Brandon: (pause) โI willโ |
Marzena: bฤdziesz |
Brandon: (pause)โyou willโ |
Marzena: bฤdzie |
Brandon: (pause)โhe, she, or it willโ |
Marzena: Now the plural - bฤdziemy |
Brandon: (pause) โwe willโ |
Marzena: bฤdziecie |
Brandon: (pause) โyou willโ |
Marzena: bฤdฤ
|
Brandon: (pause) โthey willโ |
Marzena: Great job everyone! |
Brandon: Now this verb can function as a future tense of imperfective verbs. |
Marzena: In that case, we put the correct form of "bฤdฤ" together with a verb - either the infinitive or third person past tense form. Another way to use "bฤdฤ" is together with the infinitive. |
Brandon: Its last function is as an auxiliary verb. In that case, itโs only an indicator of a future tense. |
Marzena: Exactly. Letโs have a look at some sample sentences. For example - Bฤdฤ jutro zajฤty. |
Brandon: โIโll be busy tomorrow.โ |
Marzena: As you can see here, "bฤdฤ" functions as โwillโ in English. Another example can be - Bฤdziesz w domu o 7? |
Brandon: โWill you be at home at seven?โ |
Marzena: Now, listeners, try to make a sentence by yourself. |
Brandon: Imagine you want to say - โIโll be at work tomorrowโ. |
Marzena: (pause) Did you think of the sentence? Hereโs the correct way to say that - Juto bฤdฤ w pracy. |
Brandon: Letโs try one more time. How would you say โRobert will be at school today in the morningโ? |
Marzena: Okay.. a few seconds for you guys... (pause) Ready? Okay, here we go - Robert bฤdzie w szkole dziล rano. |
Brandon: How did you do, listeners? |
