INTRODUCTION
Betsey: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Polish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Betsey: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Where are you from? In Polish this is
Joanna: Skąd jesteś?
Betsey: The first word in the question is

Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) skąd
Betsey: Listen again and repeat.
Joanna: skąd
{Pause}
Betsey: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Joanna: jesteś
Betsey: meaning “you are”.

Betsey: Master the following pattern and responses to the question “Where are you from?”
Joanna: Jestem ze Stanów Zjednoczonych.
Betsey: "I'm from the U.S.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Joanna: (Slow) Jestem ze Stanów Zjednoczonych.
{pause}
Betsey For countries like the United States, Sweden, Slovakia, and Switzerland we have to use the particle "ze" instead of the particle "z" to mean ‘from.’ For example
Joanna Jestem “ze” Szwecji
Betsey I'm from Sweden.
Betsey: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Joanna: jestem
Betsey: meaning “I am”.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) jestem
Betsey: Now repeat

Betsey:Now repeat.
Joanna: ze
{Pause}
Betsey: And next
Joanna: Stanów Zjednoczonych
Betsey: which means “of the United States.”
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) Stanów Zjednoczonych
Betsey:Now repeat.
Joanna: Stanów Zjednoczonych
{Pause}
Betsey: Listen to the speaker say, I'm from the U.S., and then repeat.
Joanna: Jestem ze Stanów Zjednoczonych.
{pause}
Betsey: To use a different phrase, replace “of the U.S.” with “of Japan.”
Joanna: Japonii
Betsey: of Japan
Joanna: (slow) Japonii (regular) Japonii
Betsey: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “of Japan”
Joanna: Jestem z Japonii.
Betsey: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “of the United States.” Say I'm from Japan

Betsey: To use a different phrase, replace “of Japan” with “of Germany.”
Joanna: Niemiec
Betsey: of Germany
Joanna: (slow) Niemiec (regular) Niemiec
Betsey: Listen to the phrase again, this time with of Germany
