Yes, you are right, there is a grammatical rule which says that we need genitive case after the verb ‘potrzebować’, as well as after szukać and używać. This is the only correct form. However, many people unconsciously use accusative case, what is probably a German influence on Polish language.

Isn't there a grammar rule that we should use genitive case after the verb 'potrzebować'?

Why accusative is used in this sentence 'Będziemy potrzebowali też białą tablicę, prawda?'?
