Monika: Why do you want to work for us?
Tomek: I like challenges, and I wanted to try something else.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Michael: I hate job interviews. They’re always so nerve-wracking.
Marzena: I agree. It can be difficult to market yourself correctly in such a short time.
Michael: And some of the questions can be hard to answer.
Marzena: The questions we heard in the dialogue this time were pretty straight forward though, I think.
Michael: Yes, they were some of the more common questions. What are job interviews like in Poland? What are companies looking for?
Marzena: I think that the most important thing is your experience.
Michael: Try to make your experience relevant to the job at hand.
Marzena: The second most important thing is how you conduct yourself at the interview.
Michael: This can be the hardest thing. How important is education?
Marzena: It’s becoming less important, I think.
Michael: Finally, how do we say "CV" or "resume" in Polish?
Marzena: życiorys
Michael: Okay, now onto the vocab.

Marzena: do tej pory

Michael: Let’s break this down.
Marzena: Do means "until" or "by." Next is tej.
Michael: This is a demonstrative in the genitive case for feminine nouns and means "this."
Marzena: pory means "period." It is the genitive of pora.
Michael: You can use this phrase to say that something was happening until this point in time.
Marzena: It can be used in both formal and informal settings.
Michael: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Marzena: Sure. For example, you can say... Do tej pory to oni wysyłali nam najpierw faktury.
Michael: ... which means "Until now, they were the ones who sent us the invoices first."
Michael: Okay, what's the next word?
Marzena: wyzwanie

Lesson focus

Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn about interviews. Let’s get our listeners prepped for a job interview in Poland, Marzena!
Marzena: We can definitely try! A question you’re likely to hear is Proszę nam coś o sobie opowiedzieć.
Michael: "Tell us something about yourself, please." If you are a man and want to talk about your education, you answer with...
Marzena: Skończyłem…
Michael: "I graduated from…" And for women?
Marzena: Skończyłam...
Michael: Here are a couple of university majors that you can use.
Marzena: matematyka
Michael: "mathematics"
Marzena: fizyka
Michael: "physics"
Marzena: chemia
Michael: "chemistry." If you want to talk about work experience, you can say...
Marzena: Do tej pory pracowałem/pracowałam jako…
Michael: "Until now, I have been working as…" Or you can say...
Marzena: Mam również doświadczenie jako...
Michael: "I also have an experience as…" Now let’s hear some job titles.
Marzena: zarządzanie
Michael: "management"
Marzena: programista
Michael: "programmer"
Marzena: przedstawiciel handlowy
Michael: "sales representative." Once you’ve talked about your education and employment, you’ll likely be asked why you are applying for the job.
Marzena: For example, you might hear Dlaczego wybrał pan naszą firmę?
Michael: "Why did you choose our company?"
Marzena: Or, Dlaczego zdecydowała się pani na zmianę pracy?
Michael: "Why did you decide to change your job?" They can be very daunting questions to answer.
Marzena: A common way to answer these questions, or any questions, is with ponieważ.
Michael: "Because." How can we answer these questions with "because"?
Marzena: Ponieważ chcę się rozwijać.
Michael: "Because I want to progress myself."
Marzena: If asked a direct question, you can drop ponieważ. Chcę się rozwijać.
Michael: "I want to progress myself."

Outro

Michael: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Marzena: Do zobaczenia!
