John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to Polishpod101.com. This is Business Polish for Beginners Season 1 Lesson 10 - Asking for Directions at a Polish Conference. John Here.
Marzena: Cześć, I'm Marzena.
John: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask for directions. The conversation takes place at an exhibition hall.
Marzena: It's between Monika and a receptionist.
John: The speakers are strangers, therefore, they will speak formal Polish. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Monika: Dzień dobry, Monika Mackiewicz, jestem wystawcą. Gdzie mogę sprawdzić number naszego stoiska.
Recepcjonista: Informacja dla wystawców znajduje się na drugim piętrze.
Monika: Gdzie jest winda?
Recepcjonista: Proszę iść prosto i w prawo.

Marzena: There are over 200 every year.
John: Wow, that’s a lot. There must be many people exhibiting at the shows too.
Marzena: Around 30,000, from Poland and abroad.
John: Where are the biggest trade shows?
Marzena: They’re in places like Poznan and Kielce.
John: And what kind of trade shows are held?
Marzena: There’s many different ones, such as food, electricity, or information technology.

John: meaning "to check."
John: This is a verb.
Marzena: Sprawdzić is the perfective form of sprawdzać.
John: It means "to check."
Marzena: You can use it to say you want or need to check something.
John: What form is usually used?
Marzena: In general, we use the imperfective form.
John: Can you give us an example using this word?
Marzena: Sure. For example, you can say... Muszę to jeszcze sprawdzić.

John: This is a noun.

Marzena: In Polish, this is gdzie. In a more business setting, you can use it in the phrase Przepraszam, gdzie jest...
John: "Excuse me, where is the…?" Let’s run through some vocabulary for places in an office.
Marzena: sala konferencyjna
John: "conference room"
Marzena: dział kadr
John: "HR department"
Marzena: winda
John: "elevator"
Marzena: moje biurko
John: "my desk." So you can add these words to the phrase we heard before.
Marzena: Przepraszam, gdzie jest toaleta?
John: "Excuse me, where is the toilet?"
Marzena: You can also use gdzie to ask about where you can do something. Przepraszam, gdzie mogę...
John: "Excuse me, where can I…?"
Marzena: Przepraszam, gdzie mogę to wydrukować?
John: "Excuse me, where can I print this out?" Finally, let’s look at some general words we can use when giving directions or hearing them.
Marzena: na prawo
John: "on the right side"
Marzena: na lewo
John: "on the left side"
Marzena: Iść prosto
John: "to go straight"
Marzena: skręcić w lewo
John: "to turn left"
Marzena: To talk about floors, you use the neuter form of the ordinal number and follow it with piętro.
John: That means "floor" and is also a neuter noun.
Marzena: For example, trzecie piętro.
John: "third floor"
Marzena: We also have parter.
John: "ground floor"
Marzena: To say "on" a certain floor, we use na.
