INTRODUCTION |
Gabriella: Hello everyone and welcome back to PolishPod101.com. This is Absolute Beginner, season 1, lesson 23, Let’s Do Some Shopping in Poland! I’m Gabriella. |
Joanna: And I’m Joanna. |
Gabriella: In this lesson you'll revise what you have learned so far. |
Joanna: This conversation takes place at home. |
Gabriella: The conversation is between Gosia and Alex. |
Joanna: The speakers are friends, so they’ll be using informal Polish. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Gabriella: In the dialogue some auction site was mentioned.. |
Joanna: Yes, a Polish auction service called Allegro |
Gabriella: When was it created? |
Joanna: In 1999, in Poznan city. |
Gabriella: Is it a popular way of shopping in Poland? |
Joanna: Yes, after access to the Internet became easy and pretty cheap, auctions soon increased in popularity! |
Gabriella: How do you buy or sell things there? |
Joanna: First of all, you need to create an account, and Allegro carefully checks and confirms your information. |
Gabriella: Are the prices good? |
Joanna: Most of the time they are, and that’s what makes Allegro very popular, especially among younger generations |
Gabriella: Listeners, for more information about this auction service, refer to the lesson notes. |
KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Gabriella: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. Joanna, what’s the first word? |
Joanna: ‘słuchawki’ |
Gabriella: “headphones” |
Joanna: the noun ‘słuchawki’ is in its plural form and can refer only to “headphones”. When it’s in its singular form, the meaning changes. |
Gabriella: How does it change? |
Joanna: when we say ‘słuchawka’, which is a singular noun, we are talking about a landline phone’s or intercom’s receiver |
Gabriella: Listeners, be sure to remember this difference! |
Joanna: In the English language there’s no relation, but in Polish the verb “to listen” and the noun “headphones” are related |
Gabriella: How so? |
Joanna: Well, in Polish “to listen” is ‘słuchać’ |
Gabriella: ohhh.. I see it now! So the noun “headphones” derives from the verb “to listen” |
Joanna: Exactly! |
Gabriella: To make sure everyone understands, let’s practice a few. Listeners, please repeat after Joanna |
Joanna: ‘słuchać’ |
Gabriella: (pause) “to listen” |
Joanna: ‘słuchawki’ |
Gabriella: (pause) “headphones” |
Joanna: ‘słuchawka’ |
Gabriella: (pause) “landline phone’s or intercom’s receiver” |
Joanna: Great job everyone! |
Gabriella: Okay, what’s next? |
Joanna: the phrase ‘chodźmy na..’ |
Gabriella: “let’s go for / to..” |
Joanna: First of all, ‘chodźmy’ itself, means “let’s go” whereas ‘na’ can be translated in many ways and it all depends on the word that follows. |
Gabriella: To create a better picture, let’s hear a few examples |
Joanna: ‘chodźmy na spacer’ |
Gabriella: “let’s go for a walk” |
Joanna: ‘chodźmy na plażę’ |
Gabriella: “let’s go to the beach” |
Joanna: ‘chodźmy na lody’ |
Gabriella: “let’s go out for ice-cream” |
Joanna: The latter example really means - “let’s go out and have some ice-cream”. We often use this phrase to talk about something we want to go and eat |
Gabriella: And now that we’ve learned some new and interesting facts about Polish words, let’s move on to the grammar! |
GRAMMAR POINT |
Gabriella: In this lesson, we’ll revise all that we have learned in this series so far. |
Joanna: It’s going to be a great chance for you to practice with us! |
Gabriella: Let’s start by talking about your hobbies. |
Joanna: Everyone! How do we ask about someone’s hobbies? You have a few seconds.. 3.. 2..1.. - ‘jakie masz hobby?’ |
Gabriella: “what are your hobbies?” |
Joanna: Now try to say that your hobby is fishing…As a reminder, “fishing” is wędkarstwo |
Gabriella: Is fishing popular in Poland? |
Joanna: Yes, it is, especially among men. |
Gabriella: Everyone ready? “My hobby is fishing” in Polish is |
Joanna: “Moje hobby to wędkarstwo” |
Gabriella: “I haven’t had much time for hobbies recently.” Listener, do you know how to say, more generally, “I don’t have time”? |
Joanna: In Polish, it’s…. (pause) “Nie mam czasu” |
Gabriella: Good job! How do we make negative forms of other verbs you’ve learned so far? Let’s say - “like” and “must”? |
Joanna: (pause) respectively - ‘nie lubię’ and ‘nie muszę’ |
Gabriella: I’m sure everyone got it right! |
Joanna: Remember that to make negative forms of verbs, it’s enough to just add the word ‘nie’ at the beginning |
Gabriella: Now let’s imagine that we’re shopping. Here’s a task for you, listeners - please say in Polish - “I must buy sugar, milk and potatoes” |
Joanna: Give it a try!... (pause) Okay! Ready? Here it goes - ‘Muszę kupić cukier, mleko i ziemniaki’ |
Gabriella: Great! Now let’s change it a bit! Say “I need butter and bread” |
Joanna: (pause) In Polish ‘Potrzebuję masło i chleb’ |
Gabriella: Now this one’s a bit more challenging. How would you say - “This store is the best”? |
Joanna: It’s all about adjectives here! And don’t forget about gender agreement! |
Gabriella: Okay! Time’s up! Joanna? |
Joanna: ‘Ten sklep jest najlepszy’ |
Gabriella: Let’s try one more! |
Joanna: You’re really getting into it! |
Gabriella: Practice makes perfect! So, everyone, say “It’s the tastiest cake in the world” |
Joanna: Please pay attention to the gender agreement again.. I’ll give you a hint - “cake” is ciasto in Polish and it’s a neuter noun! (pause) Okay! Here it goes - ‘To najsmaczniejsze ciasto na świecie’ |
Gabriella: Great job everyone! |
Joanna: We hope you managed to remember all the sentences practiced in this lesson! |
Gabriella: If you didn’t, there’s no reason to get discouraged, just go back to the lessons you had problems with and practice, practice and practice. |
Outro
|
Joanna: We hope you enjoyed this lesson. I’m sure you’re all doing great, so don’t forget to come back for the next one! |
Gabriella: Thanks for listening, and see you next time! Bye! |
Joanna: Papa. |
