INTRODUCTION
Betsey: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Polish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Betsey: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Are you hungry? In Polish this is
Joanna: Czy jesteś głodny?
Betsey: The first word in the question is
Joanna: czy
Betsey: meaning something like question marker in English.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) czy
Betsey: Listen again and repeat.
Joanna: czy
{Pause}
Betsey: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Joanna: jesteś
Betsey: meaning you are.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) jesteś
Betsey: Now repeat.
Joanna: jesteś
{Pause}
Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Joanna: czy jesteś
{pause}
And next
Joanna: głodny
Betsey: meaning hungry.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) głodny
Betsey: Now repeat.
Joanna: głodny

Listen to the entire question and repeat.

Betsey: "I'm a little hungry.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.

Betsey: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Joanna: jestem
Betsey: means I am.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) jestem
Betsey: Now repeat
Joanna: jestem
{Pause}
Betsey: And next
Joanna: trochę
meaning a little bit.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) trochę
Betsey:Now repeat.
Joanna: trochę
{Pause}
Betsey: And next
Joanna: głodny
meaning hungry.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) głodny
Betsey:Now repeat.
Joanna: głodny
{Pause}
Betsey: Listen to the speaker say, I'm a little hungry., and then repeat.
Joanna: Jestem trochę głodny.
{pause}
Betsey: To expand on the pattern, say I'm very hungry..
Joanna: Jestem bardzo głodny.
Betsey: I'm very hungry.
Joanna: (slow) Jestem bardzo głodny. (regular) Jestem bardzo głodny.
Betsey: Listen to the phrase again, this time with I'm very hungry.
Joanna: Jestem bardzo głodny.
Betsey: Now say I'm very hungry.

Joanna: Jestem bardzo głodny.
Betsey: To use a different phrase, say I'm not hungry..
Joanna: Nie jestem głodny.
Betsey: I'm not hungry.
Joanna: (slow) Nie jestem głodny. (regular) Nie jestem głodny.
Betsey: Listen to the phrase again, this time with I'm not hungry.
Joanna: Nie jestem głodny.
Betsey: Now say I'm not hungry.

Joanna: Nie jestem głodny.
Betsey: To expand on the pattern, say “I'm hungry but only a little bit..”
Joanna: Jestem głodny,ale tylko trochę.
Betsey: I'm hungry but only a little bit.
Joanna: (slow) Jestem głodny,ale tylko trochę. (regular) Jestem głodny,ale tylko trochę.
Betsey: Listen to the phrase again, this time with I'm hungry but only a little bit.
Joanna: Jestem głodny,ale tylko trochę.
Betsey: Now say I'm hungry but only a little bit.
{pause}
Joanna: Jestem głodny,ale tylko trochę.
QUIZ
Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Poland and a someone asks you if you're hungry. You want to answer I'm a little hungry.. Respond to the question.
Joanna: Czy jesteś głodny? (five seconds) Jestem trochę głodny.
Betsey: Now you want to say I'm very hungry. Respond to the question.
Joanna: Czy jesteś głodny? (five seconds) Jestem bardzo głodny.
Betsey: You want to say I'm not hungry.. . Answer the speaker's question.
Joanna: Czy jesteś głodny? (five seconds) Nie jestem głodny.
Betsey: You want to say I'm hungry but only a little bit.. Respond to the question.
Joanna: Czy jesteś głodny? (five seconds) Jestem głodny,ale tylko trochę.
Betsey: You want to ask someone if they are hungry. Ask the question
