INTRODUCTION
Betsey: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Polish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Betsey: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question What's wrong? In Polish this is
Joanna: Co się stało?
Betsey: The first word in the question is
Joanna: co
Betsey: meaning “what” in English.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) co
Betsey: Listen again and repeat.
Joanna: co
{Pause}
Betsey: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Joanna: się
Betsey: meaning oneself.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) się
Betsey: Now repeat.
Joanna: się
{Pause}
Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Joanna: co się
{pause}
And next
Joanna: stało
Betsey: meaning happened.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) stało
Betsey: Now repeat.

Betsey: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Joanna: jestem
Betsey: means I am.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) jestem
Betsey: Now repeat
Joanna: jestem
{Pause}
Betsey: And next
Joanna: zmęczony
meaning tired.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) zmęczony
Betsey: Now repeat.
Joanna: zmęczony
{Pause}
Betsey: Listen to the speaker say, I'm tired., and then repeat.
Joanna: Jestem zmęczony.
{pause}
Betsey: To expand on the pattern, replace tired with sick.
Joanna: chory
Betsey: sick
Joanna: (slow) chory (regular) chory
Betsey: Listen to the phrase again, this time with sick
Joanna: Jestem chory.
Betsey: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace tired. Say I'm sick.

Joanna: Jestem chory.
Betsey: To use a different phrase, replace sick with sleepy.
Joanna: śpiący
Betsey: sleepy
Joanna: (slow) śpiący (regular) śpiący
Betsey: Listen to the phrase again, this time with sleepy
Joanna: Jestem śpiący.
Betsey: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace sick with ‘sleepy” Say I'm sleepy.

Betsey: To expand on the pattern, replace sleepy with exhausted.
Joanna: wyczerpany
Betsey: exhausted
Joanna: (slow) wyczerpany (regular) wyczerpany
Betsey: Listen to the phrase again, this time with exhausted
Joanna: Jestem wyczerpany.
Betsey: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace sleepy with exhausted. Say I'm exhausted.

Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Poland and someone asks you what's wrong. You want to answer I'm tired.. Respond to the question.

Betsey: Now you want to say I'm sick. Respond to the question.
Joanna: Co się stało? (five seconds) Jestem chory.
Betsey: You want to say I'm sleepy.. . Answer the speaker's question.
Joanna: Co się stało? (five seconds) Jestem śpiący.
Betsey: Imagine you're exhausted. Respond to the question.
Joanna: Co się stało? (five seconds) Jestem wyczerpany.
Betsey: Now you want to ask someone what's wrong. Ask the question
