| Betsey:What are you interested in? |
| Jan:Interesuję się piłką nożną. |
| Betsey:I am interested in football. |

| Betsey:My younger brother also loves football! |

| Betsey:So Joanna, is soccer a popular sport in Poland? |
| Joanna:Yes! Extremely popular! There are over 40,000 Poles who play soccer regularly, and millions who play occasionally. |
| Betsey:So many people treat it as a kind of leisure activity? |
| Joanna:Exactly. Also, during any kind of championship, Poles become very passionate - many Polish houses, windows, cars, and bars are decorated in white and red, the Polish national colors. |
| Betsey:That must be an interesting spectacle! |
| Joanna:It is! Even people who aren’t usually interested in soccer will meet up with friends to watch the match together. Of course, they get all dressed up, and have snacks and beer. |
| Betsey:Are there any famous Polish soccer players? |
| Joanna:There are! One example is Zbigniew Boniek, who is considered by FIFA to be one of 100 best players of all time. |

| KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES |
| Betsey:Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| Joanna:The first word is ‘uwielbiać’ |
| Betsey:“to love” |
| Joanna:You have to be careful with this word, because the English translation is not very precise. |
| Betsey:In English, we use “to love” in many different situations and contexts. But Polish is different. |
| Joanna:Yes, because if we are talking about feelings towards a person, we will use the verb ‘kochać’, but if we are talking about objects or actions, or things we love doing, we use the verb ‘uwielbiać’ |
| Betsey:Can you give us a few sample sentences? |
| Joanna:Of course. For example - ‘Uwielbiam lody waniliowe’ |
| Betsey:“I love vanilla ice-cream” |
| Joanna:‘Uwielbiam piłkę nożną’ |
| Betsey:“I love football” |
| Joanna:‘On uwielbia chodzić do kina’ |
| Betsey:“He loves going to the movies” |
| Joanna:So remember, when you talk about feelings towards another person, use ‘kochać’, and if you talk about objects and actions you really like or love, use ‘uwielbiać’. |
| Betsey:Okay, got it. What’s the next word? |
| Joanna:‘piłka nożna’ |
| Betsey:“football”, or “soccer” |
| Joanna:‘piłka’ stands for... |
| Betsey:...“a ball”... |
| Joanna:...and ‘nożna’ is an adjective that comes from the noun ‘noga’. |
| Betsey:Which means “a leg” |
| Joanna:please repeat after me - ‘piłka nożna’ |
| Betsey:…....... “football” |
| Joanna:There’s one more way to refer to this sport, which is probably used more often than ‘piłna nożna’. Before, we mentioned the noun - ‘noga’. |
| Betsey:Don’t tell me this is how Poles refer to the sport! |
| Joanna:Yes! we just say ‘noga’. |
| Betsey:Which stands for “a leg”. |
| Joanna:(laughs) I’m sure it sounds strange or funny for many of you. |
| Betsey:(laughs) It does! Ok, let’s move on to the grammar now. |

| Joanna:In this lesson we’ll continue the topic, but we’re going to show you another way of talking about things you like. |

| Betsey:So in the dialogue, Ewa asked Jan about his interests. What was that sentence? |
| Joanna:‘Czym się interesujesz?’ |
| Betsey:“What are you interested in?” |
| Joanna:This question is composed of the pronoun ‘czym’ in the instrumental case... |
| Betsey:...which means “what”... |
| Joanna:...and the verb ‘się interesujesz’, which is the second-person singular form of the verb ‘interesować się’... |
| Betsey:...meaning “to be interested in”. |
| Joanna:Literally, ‘interesować się’ translates to... |
| Betsey:“to interest oneself”, but of course we’ll stick with the English equivalent - “to be interested in” |
| Joanna:You will find the conjugation of the verb ‘interesować się’ in the lesson notes. |
| Betsey:There’s one very important note about this verb - it always requires the instrumental case. We talked about the instrumental case in lessons 8 and 9, so if you don’t remember, be sure to go through those lessons again. |
| Joanna:Now, you’re probably wondering how we can answer the question Czym się interesujesz?’ |
| Betsey:In the dialogue, Jan answered Ewa’s question with “I’m interested in football”, which was... |
| Joanna:‘Interesuję się piłką nożną’. At the beginning of this sentence, we have ‘interesuję się’, the first-person form of the verb ‘interesować się’ |
| Betsey:“to be interested in”... |
| Joanna:...then comes the area of interest, which in this case is ‘piłką nożną’, the instrumental form of ‘piłka nożna’ |
| Betsey:Meaning “football”. |
| Joanna:So altogether, we have ‘Interesuję się piłką nożną’ |
| Betsey:Just to remind you, any noun or adjective following the verb “to be interested in” has to be in the instrumental form. |
| Joanna:Listeners, try to answer the question by yourselves - Czym się interesujesz?’ |
| Betsey:“what are you interested in?” [pause] |
| Joanna:Betsey, now it’s your turn - ‘czym się interesujesz?’ |
| Betsey:“I’m interested in music” |
| Joanna:‘interesuję się muzyką’ |
| Betsey:Joanna, what are you interested in? |
| Joanna:‘interesuję się językami obcymi’ |
