| Gabriella: It’s between Gosia and Alex. |
| Joanna: The speakers are friends, so they’ll be using informal Polish. |

| Joanna: It’s quite popular yes, and it’s getting more so these days! Poland is also quite well known for its metal abroad. |
| Gabriella: What bands exactly? |
| Joanna: For sure Vader, which play death metal. They’re well known to people who are into this kind of music. |
| Gabriella: Can you tell us more about that group? |
| Joanna: They were formed in 1983 and are often called the “Polish Slayer”, since they were precursors of death metal on the Polish scene |
| Gabriella: Does their name have any connection to the Star Wars’ Darth Vader? |
| Joanna: Yes! Their name comes from that character. |
| Gabriella: What are some interesting facts about them? |
| Joanna: They’re the only death metal band to sell 10,000 copies of a demo. Also they have played concerts in most European countries and also Japan, Peru, Mexico, Colombia, Nepal and Venezuela |

| Gabriella: Let's take a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. Joanna, what’s the first word? |
| Joanna: ‘fotografia’ |
| Gabriella: “photography” |
| Joanna: The noun ‘fotografia’ has two meanings, the first one was used in the dialogue. |
| Gabriella: what’s the other one? |
| Joanna: “photograph” or in other words “picture” |
| Gabriella: but only the one taken by camera. |
| Joanna: Polish has quite a few words for the word “photograph”. First we have ‘fotografia’, then ‘zdjęcie’ |
| Gabriella: which can be translated as the English “picture” |
| Joanna: And the more colloquial one - ‘fota’ or ‘fotka’ |
| Gabriella: Equivalent to the English ‘pic’, as in a photo |
| Joanna: Another word I want to introduce to you is the noun ‘taniec’ |
| Gabriella: “dance” |
| Joanna: If we talk about someone whose job is dancing, here again we have different versions for noun when it comes to gender |
| Gabriella: and so “male dancer” is |
| Joanna: ‘tancerz’ |
| Gabriella: and “female dancer” is |
| Joanna: ‘tancerka’ |
| Gabriella: There are many kinds of dances - can you give us a few examples? |
| Joanna: Of course! Let’s start with ‘taniec towarzyski’ |
| Gabriella: “ballroom dance” |
| Joanna: Another example could be - ‘taniec ludowy’ |
| Gabriella: “folk dance” |
| Joanna: The last word to talk about in this vocabulary section is - ‘hobby’ |
| Gabriella: The same as the English “hobby”! |
| Joanna: Yes, exactly! There is no specific Polish word for hobbies, so we use the English one. There’s a very interesting fact about that word. |
| Gabriella: I’m all ears! |
| Joanna: In Polish, it’s form is always singular. It makes no difference whether you are talking about one specific hobby or several hobbies - it’s always just ‘hobby’. |
| Gabriella: Remember that, listeners! And now, let’s move on to the grammar. |

| Gabriella: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to talk about your hobbies. |
| Joanna: Finally something more pleasant, than memorizing Polish numerals, right Gabriella? |
| Gabriella: [laughter] You’re so right! |
| Joanna: Does everybody remember how to conjugate the verb ‘być’? |
| Gabriella: meaning “to be” |
| Joanna: I hope so, because we will need it to ask about someone’s hobby. |
| Gabriella: How does it sound? |
| Joanna: ‘Jakie masz hobby?’ |
| Gabriella: “What are your hobbies?” |
| Joanna: We start off with the neuter pronoun ‘jakie’ |
| Gabriella: here it means “what” |
| Joanna: then the verb ‘masz’, the second person singular form of the verb ‘mieć’ |
| Gabriella: meaning “you have” |
| Joanna: and at the end the neuter noun ‘hobby’ |
| Gabriella: in English “hobbies” |
| Joanna: We mentioned that in the vocabulary section. In Polish, ‘hobby’ doesn’t change its form. Whether you’re talking about one or many, it’s always the same form - ‘hobby’ |
| Gabriella: Let’s hear the question once more |
| Joanna: ‘jakie masz hobby?’ |
| Gabriella: “what are your hobbies?” |
| Joanna: Answering the question is also very easy. All you need to know is 4 simple words! In the dialogue, Alex said - ‘moje hobby to gry komputerowe’ |
| Gabriella: Let’s break down this sentence. |
| Joanna: It starts with ‘moje’ |
| Gabriella: meaning “my” |
| Joanna: then there is the noun ‘hobby’, followed by ‘to’ |
| Gabriella: which is the equivalent of the English “is” |
| Joanna: and lastly something we really like, let’s say ‘gry komputerowe’ |
| Gabriella: “computer games” |
| Joanna: Of course if you have more than one hobby, you can list a few or link two of them with ‘i’ |
| Gabriella: meaning “and” |
| Joanna: ‘Moje hobby to gotowanie i muzyka’ |
| Gabriella: “My hobbies are cooking and music” |
| Joanna: Gabriella, what’s your hobby? |
| Gabriella: Hmm...reading books! |
| Joanna: Okay, so if Gabriella was a good student she would say in Polish - ‘moje hobby to czytanie książek’ |
| Gabriella: “My hobby is reading books” |
| Joanna: Great! Now you can ask and talk about your hobbies! |
